Charity Involvement

MKR RFC prides itself not just in it's success in rugby and keeping old friends together but also our involvement with various charities. We take part in charity events at least once a year and are very lucky with the influence in the local community with regards to raising awareness and money for these charities.

National 3 Peaks Challenge - Gully's Place

In May 2016, 8 members of MKR RFC took part in the National 3 Peaks Challenge. The challenge was to climb and travel between the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales in just 24 hours.

Starting at 17.00 at the base of Ben Nevis (Scotland) the team climbed up and back down the highest mountain in the UK (at 4,413) before an overnight stint in the minibus which was driven by our two wonderful volunteers, Davina Nichols and Jason Bowie.

The 8 Rovers arrived at Scafell Pike (England) just before the sun rose and made it up up and back down the peak (at 3,210 feet) by late morning.

It was then time to head to Snowdon (Wales) for the final stint of the challenge. The sun was shining as the boys couldn't have asked for a better day for it, all making it to the finish at the top of the mountain (3,560 feet) after they began the journey at the base of Ben Nevis just 24 hours prior, walking a massive 23.6 miles/38km.

The Rovers managed to raise nearly £2,500 for local charity Gully's Place, a department in the children's ward of Poole Hospital that helps children with life limiting illnesses.

Dan Ferris-Oates Memorial Rugby Games

In 2016 Dan Ferris-Oates was lost to Cardiomyopathy. As a previous P.E teacher and rugby couch during the Rovers' school years at Poole High School, MKR RFC decided to create a memorial game at the end of the year in the memory of Dan and to raise money for Cardiomyopathy UK.

The one off game has now turned into a yearly event and is approaching it's third year with MKR RFC holding the shield after wins in 2016 and 2017.

There is discussion of adding more teams to the event to creating a tournament style for 2018 and for the number of years to come.
